Why The Jarvis

The Jarvis is named in honour of Charles Alfred Jarvis VC, a Royal Engineer whose actions during the opening weeks of the First World War earned him the Victoria Cross.

On 23 August 1914 at Jemappes, Belgium, Jarvis worked for around an hour and a half under heavy enemy fire to prepare and fire demolition charges on a bridge, helping cover the British withdrawal from Mons. He was wounded during the action and later received the Victoria Cross for his gallantry.

His story reflects the values that sit behind Stirling: courage, composure under pressure and the determination to complete the task in front of you.

The Jarvis carries his name as a reminder of that legacy, and of the individuals whose actions helped shape the history of the Victoria Cross.
