Why The Upham
The Upham is named in honour of Charles Hazlitt Upham VC & Bar, one of only three people in history to have been awarded the Victoria Cross twice, and the only combat soldier to do so.
Serving with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Second World War, Upham was first awarded the Victoria Cross for extraordinary gallantry and leadership during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. He later received a Bar to his VC for his actions at Ruweisat Ridge in North Africa in July 1942, where he continued to lead his men despite being severely wounded.
His story came to represent resilience, courage and an extraordinary sense of duty. Famously modest about his own actions, Upham viewed the recognition as belonging as much to the men he served alongside as to himself.
The Upham carries his name as a tribute to that legacy, determination under pressure, loyalty to those around you, and the resolve to keep going when circumstances are at their hardest.
