Why The Campbell
The Campbell honours the legacy of John Charles “Jock” Campbell VC, whose courage and leadership during the fighting at Sidi Rezegh in November 1941 earned him the Victoria Cross.
Across two days of intense fighting on 21 and 22 November, Campbell repeatedly placed himself in positions of extreme danger, leading from the front and setting an example that inspired those around him. His determination, composure and disregard for his own safety had a powerful effect on his men and contributed directly to the heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy.
His actions embodied the qualities of courage, duty and leadership that continue to resonate long after the events themselves.
The Campbell carries his name in tribute to that legacy, recognising a man whose example under pressure became an inspiration to those he led, and whose service remains part of the enduring story of the Victoria Cross.
